Flips and Rolls

FRONT ROLL

The front roll is the very same as the back roll, except your approach is from the landing side of the wake during the back roll, and the ski is thrown up on the outside of the rope. During the back roll the ski leads in the rotation where as in the front roll, the body leads the rotation and the ski trails behind. As funny as this may sound and as awkward as your first attempts may feel, you should feel little difference between the two.

BACKSIDE ROLL

The wake backside roll is an inverted trick that is side over side rotation. To start off with, you need to get comfortable with 5 to 6 foot high wake to wake jumps first. Take your time and build up to your roll in steps.
About 15 feet outside the wake make your cut towards the wake with medium intensity. The ski should be about 2 feet off the water as you approach the wake. About 5 feet before you get to the wake lean forward to swoop the ski down, eyes should be focused on the water surface. As the ski barely kisses the water, lean way back lowering the handle to your legs pulling up on the ski with your feet as in a stomach crunch. Gently turn your wake side shoulder and head towards the wake as you take off to help spot the landing. Breaking forward or looking at the ski tip during rotation will stop all your momentum causing your effort to fall short. Remember eyes must be kept open during the entire revolution, from liftoff through the landing.

To stop the rotation for your landing is simple but requires timing and good air presence which only comes from repeated attempts. The trick is when you first see the water surface during rotation to not take your eyes off of it, simultaneously move the handle to your outside hip. (Remember both hands on the handle during this entire maneuver.) A simple variation of the Wake Barrel Roll is named the Air or Pogo Roll. This is done the same way only without the use of the wake out on the flat water. This sets up up for using other boat wakes for huge free flying flips.
